About VisorVeil
VisorVeil started with a scratched lens and a bad headache. In the summer of 2019, our founder, Mara Delgado, was three hours into a coastal bike ride when a pair of "polarized" sunglasses she'd bought from a pop-up kiosk turned out to be nothing more than tinted plastic. The glare off the water was so bad she had to pull over. That afternoon, sitting on a curb squinting at her phone, she tried to find an honest, detailed comparison of sunglasses that actually explained lens technology, UV protection, and fit — and came up empty. Plenty of listicles, very little substance. VisorVeil was built to fix that gap.
Who We Are
We're a small, independent team of eyewear enthusiasts, opticians-in-training, and outdoor junkies scattered across three time zones. Mara leads the editorial side, drawing on a decade in retail optics and a genuine obsession with frame engineering. She's joined by Priya Anand, a former ophthalmic lab technician who handles our lens science reviews, and Tomas Reyes, a photographer and cyclist who tests durability and fit under real-world conditions — mountain trails, fishing boats, and everyday commutes included. Between us, we've tried on more sunglasses than we'd like to admit, and we still get excited when a new pair genuinely surprises us.
Our Founding Story
After that ruined bike ride, Mara started keeping a private spreadsheet comparing lens materials, UV400 claims, and polarization quality across dozens of brands, from budget drugstore finds to premium designer names. Friends began asking for recommendations. The spreadsheet turned into blog posts, the blog posts turned into full reviews, and by 2021 VisorVeil had become a full-time project with a simple mission: help people choose eyewear that actually protects their eyes and fits their life, without the marketing fluff or the guesswork.
How We Review and Pick Products
Every pair of sunglasses or eyewear frame that appears on VisorVeil goes through the same structured process before we publish a word about it.
- We buy what we test. The vast majority of products reviewed on VisorVeil are purchased at full retail price using our own funds, exactly the way a customer would buy them. This keeps our opinions free from the pressure that can come with unboxing a free sample.
- Lab-grade UV and polarization checks. We use a handheld UV meter and polarization test cards to verify that a lens delivers on its stated UV400 and polarized claims. Marketing copy doesn't always match reality, and we catch the gaps.
- Real-world wear testing. Each pair is worn for a minimum of two weeks across varied conditions — driving, hiking, water sports, or daily commuting — so we can report on comfort, slippage, fogging, and how the frame holds up to sweat, saltwater, and drops.
- Build and materials assessment. We examine hinge quality, frame material (acetate, TR90, metal alloys), nose pad comfort, and lens coatings like anti-reflective or oleophobic layers, noting where we see genuine craftsmanship versus corners cut.
- Fit and face-shape notes. Our reviewers have different face shapes and sizes, so we test and describe fit across a range of profiles rather than assuming one shape fits all.
- Price-to-value scoring. We compare each product against others in its price bracket, because a $40 pair of sunglasses shouldn't be judged by the same yardstick as a $250 designer frame — but both should deliver on their promises.
When we do accept a review sample from a brand, we disclose it clearly at the top of the article, and the sample never influences our final verdict. We don't accept payment in exchange for positive coverage, and any affiliate links on our site are used only after our editorial conclusions are already locked in.
What Makes VisorVeil Trustworthy
We know eyewear is a personal, often expensive purchase, and we take that responsibility seriously. Here's what we hold ourselves to:
- Transparent testing methods, published openly so readers can see exactly how we reach our conclusions.
- Clear disclosure of any sponsored content, free samples, or affiliate relationships.
- Regular re-testing of popular products as brands update materials or lens technology.
- A correction policy — if we get something wrong, we update the article and note the change.
- Reviews written by people who actually wear the products, not summaries pulled from a spec sheet.
VisorVeil isn't trying to be the biggest eyewear site on the internet — just the one you can trust when you're standing in front of a wall of sunglasses, unsure which pair will actually protect your eyes. If you've got a question about a product we haven't covered yet, or a review you'd like us to dig into, we'd genuinely love to hear from you.
